Sector 5 - Pilarcitos Ridge Area

NOTE: This sector has been completely changed.  Trails 09 and 40 are gone.  Trail 08 has been 'moved'  and now runs from Jacks Road to the northern point of Pilarcitos Ridge.  Trail 08 now essentially splits the ridge and will be maintained as a Fuel Break by the BLM.  Trail 82 now leaves 08 half way along the ridge and descends along the path of old Trail 40.  Just remember, Trail 82 will take you from Pilarcitos Ridge to Crescent Bluff Road.  Trail 08 will get you to "Farquhar Point" at the North end of Pilarcitos Ridge.  All access points are at some distance from this region.  It is characterized by the sandstone mesa of Pilarcitos Ridge and the soils are mostly firm sand.

Jacks Road (See Sector 8)     Multiuse road.     Bi-directional use: Road Bicycle>Mountain Bicycle> Foot>Horse

Trail 07 This extension of Pilarcitos Canyon Rd has two very soft sandy stretches but is otherwise a very gentle grade leading to the back of the Merrill Property.  Bicycle speeds average 12 mph due to soft conditions of trail tread.

Length 0.89 miles     Green Square      Multiuse road.     Bicycle>Horse>Foot

Trail 08: After ascending from Jacks Road 08 splits from 09 and traverses the north edge of the mesa or Pilarcitos Ridge.  Good views of Barloy Canyon, Hains Point (Crescent Bluff Area) to the north and the Merrill Property to the north east.  This area sees little foot traffic due to its central location and distance from road access.  Bicycle speeds average 15 mph..

Length 1.27 miles  (Spur length 0.09)   Green Square      Multiuse road..     Bicycle>Horse>Foot

Trail 80: This single track flanks 08 on the South East side.  It is sandy and soft in a few spots and will be preferred by horse riders over cyclists.

Trail 81: This short spur leads to a dramatic overlook of Jacks Rd.

Trail 82This single track links Pilarcitos Ridge with Crescent Bluff Rd on the floor of Barloy Canyon, some 300 feet below.  The trail is moderately technical due to soft sandy conditions and narrow tread.  Most will walk sections if done as an ascent thus best to do this trail as a descent.  (Note the Coalinga-Monterey Oil Pipeline traversing the base of the trail from west to east. The large "asphalt" area you cross appears to be the eroded remnants of a crude oil spill which came from the pipeline at the top of the rise just to the west of where it is crossed by the trail).  Bicycle speeds average 15 mph on descent due to soft conditions of trail tread and 6 mph on ascent due to slope.

Length  miles     Black Diamond      Multiuse trail.     Bicycle>Horse>Foot

Trail 83: This long spur leads to a dramatic overlook of Mudhen Lake and the Baroloy Canyon area.  Note the awesome sandstone cap which forms the base of this trail.

Length  miles     Green Square      Multiuse trail.     Horse>Bicycle>Foot

Trail 84: This single track continues along 08's South Eastern flank.  It is soft in a few spots but the grass which was planted in during the winter of 2001-2002 has taken well and leaves a good tread.

Length  miles     Green Square      Multiuse trail.     Horse>Bicycle>Foot

Trail 85: This single track flanks the north western side of 08 and joins the northern most section of 08 with 82.  Horses have broke through the tread's crust in a few locations however the tread is firming up now with increased use.
